Mother’s Day is fast approaching, and while most moms love a great gift and a good meal, don’t forget that a well-made, thoughtful cocktail can help round out the gifting trifecta this upcoming weekend. To help me find such a cocktail, I enlisted the help of Nick Mautone, cocktail expert and managing director of the iconic Rainbow Room located at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in the heart of New York City.
Mautone carefully selected none other than the Black Orchid made with incredible ingredients including Allaire Vodka and Crème De Violette, a classic cocktail ingredient made from a base of nine violets. “Every mother deserves flowers on Mother’s Day. The Black Orchid is the Rainbow Room’s version of a liquid flower,” Mautone told me. “The Black Orchid cocktail combines Crème De Violette, which has a distinct sweet and floral taste profile, with the super-premium and smooth Allaire Vodka, topped with an edible orchid. It makes for a light and crisp bouquet in a glass.”
Naturally, if you stop by the Rainbow Room at any time, you can sip on a handcrafted Black Orchid made by Mautone and his team, but it’s also just as simple to make at home for Mom. Below is the recipe including the quick instructions on how to make Mom extra happy this weekend.
The Black Orchid
1.25 oz Allaire Vodka
.75oz Creme De Violette
1 oz Lemon Juice
.75 oz Simple Syrup
One edible orchid
Combine all ingredients in iced shaker, shake and strain. Serve in martini glass and garnish with edible orchid.
