Even the most passionate of gym rats, the most fervent of workers and the most bookish of students know the merits of the tranquility provided by a lazy Sunday. The mere thought of a 12 hour stretch with not a responsibility in sight brings peace to many folks.
Recently, I tried the Lazybird Brown Ale from Birdsong Brewing Co. based in Charlotte, North Carolina. I’ve been sticking to lighter lagers and haven’t sipped on a craft beer from Birdsong Brewing Co. in quite some time. Lucky for me, the second I began to pour the Lazybird Brown Ale into my mason jar, I knew I had made an excellent decision. The gorgeous hue is dark brown and beautiful, and a copper-colored head forms above the mahogany liquid.
But enough about the looks, let’s get into the taste. On the nose, I’m immediately met with roasted coffee beans and dark chocolate. The chocolate is complemented with sweet cherry, reminiscent of my Dad’s favorite chocolate-covered cherry candies. A note on the nose that may escape some is that of pecan pie. The sweet and nutty warmth is detectable only at the very back of the nose but brings with it a reward of holiday cheer.
Upon first sip, I’m greeted with the taste of a bold cup of sweetened coffee. The boldness is lightened by sweet pecan pie, a carryover from the aroma. The bitterness to cut the sweetness comes not from the coffee, but from the hops: Cascade, Columbus, Galena, and Fuggle. They catch your tongue with a solid presence that quickly sits back and lets those delicious malts show through. The finish on this one is quick, a sweet and nutty finale that bursts onto the scene and then disappears as a baiting temptress, lying in wait for the next sip.
Birdsong Brewing, founded in 2011, is the brain-child of Chris and Tara Goulet and Conor Robinson, who all thought the city of Charlotte was missing a neighborhod brewery. Settled in the North Davidson district of Charlotte, the brewery caters to anyone looking for a local pint and a local tune. The best part about this North Carolina brewery is that they care so much about their community by supporting local charities and organizations that benefit Charlotte.
If you find yourself in the ever-growing city of Charlotte or if you see Birdsong at your local beer retailer, pick up their Brown Ale or any one of their brews. Not only will you be rest-assured that you’re supporting a great brewery, but you’ll know that you’re choosing a great lazy Sunday beer!
